CHRISTMAS CATALOGUE

HO members receive a Christmas Catalogue with their Cat Magazine but please remember that you can order items from this catalogue through the Branch so that we make a small profit for our funds. If you want to place an order or need a copy of the catalogue please contact Janet Woodward, Downhead Cottage, Downhead, Shepton Mallet, BA4 4LG – tel 01749 880545 or email "janet [at]downhead.f9.co.uk" (please note that my email address has changed since last year).

We may even be able to offer some items at a slightly reduced price, or save on post & packing costs by ordering in bulk. Calendars, diaries and a selection of Christmas cards will be available from Janet shortly. They will also be on sale at the Christmas Fair, but to guarantee a particular design, please order in advance, preferably by the end of October.

FUTURE EVENTS

  • 29th November - CHRISTMAS FAIR at Wells Town Hall

If you have suggestions for other events (particularly in the Glastonbury and Street area) or would like to help on any of these stalls, even if only for half an hour to give the stall holders a lunch break, please give Janet Woodward a call on 01749 880545.

Volunteers still needed

We are still desperately short of helpers in the Glastonbury/Street areas.

Recently I have written to members in that area who I hoped might be able to assist but at the time of publication have only received two replies.

I am grateful to the ladies for their response and it will help but currently the whole burden of cat welfare in the area falls on the shoulders of 4 volunteers – one of whom is also a fosterer and in full time employment. They will of course soldier on and do their best but members of the public will have to realise that there is only so much that can be fitted into a day and there will be times when we simply cannot help.

MILLIE

Dear Gill

I write this to encourage anyone who may be thinking of giving a home to an older cat to go ahead and take a chance. Nine and a half years ago we gave a home to Millie, a twelve year old tortie and white cat who was in a pen with Pauline. Millie was beautiful, with silky soft long fur and and a really sweet expression. She was feisty, it’s the tortie trait again, and liked nothing more than giving me the odd good nip (she adored Phil and rarely nipped him!) I can remember our vet telling me she would go on for years and probably carry on nipping me to the end. Well, she wasn’t far out. Millie lived to the grand old age of 21 but did soften towards me for the last few years. She was very loving and very, very healthy; we had virtually no health problems with her until the last couple of years and she was such an easy cat to look after; she ate all her food, was completely clean and litter tray trained and asked only for a warm comfortable chair and affection. We had just over nine happy years with her and we were pleased that we gave an older cat a home, although I’m sure Millie would have argued that she wasn’t old at all! Sadly she died in July after a short illness. I was starting to think that she might have made the even grander age of 22 but it was not to be.

Crystal Clear Memories

Lost loved-ones and beloved pets can now be remembered in a piece of jewellery, bookmark, vase, bowl or even a paperweight, by having their ashes fused into leaded crystal glass by Eternity Crystal. The local business, based in Moorlynch is run by partners Emily Evans and Helen Jones; Helen having been one of our Cats Protection volunteers for some years now.

Based in a tranquil workshop at Moorlynch Vineyard, near Bridgwater, the company has a patent pending for the process of fusing cremated remains into glass for the creation of their stunning memorials.

Company jeweller Helen says "Burying or scattering of your loved-ones ashes is such a final farewell and something many of us are unable to bring ourselves to do. All too often they end up being stored at the bottom of a wardrobe, or in a dour urn on a mantelpiece. Our products are a way of celebrating the life of a loved-one by creating a beautiful and lasting memorial. Only a small portion of the ashes are required to create one of our pieces which leaves the remainder to be scattered or buried in the deceased chosen place of rest, secure in the knowledge that a part of them will be with you always as a source of comfort and a dignified reminder of shared times."
